And for Harriers boss Mark Yates, it must have felt like Groundhog Day.

"I am tired of repeating this and I am sure the fans are tired of me saying it but I felt again today we should have taken something from the game," he said.

"We enjoyed a good first half where we created a number of chances but again failed to find the net.

"I will not criticise anyone when we create chances especially against an Exeter team who are fighting to get into the play offs."

However, Yates hinted that he may bring in players on loan to bulk up the squad.

"Our second half performance was not good enough," he added.

"We will have to look closely at the small squad and see if we can bring in loan players before Thursday. This will strengthen the side and hopefully put us back on track."

"Once again we have turned off at the wrong time, allowed a long ball to be played down and we haven't attacked the lay off and the ball ends up in the back of our net".

Harriers last tasted a league victory away from Aggborough on November 3 last year with a 2-0 victory over Burton Albion and, on the evidence of a spirited first half showing, there was optimism that this sequence was about to end.

In blustery conditions Harriers adapted well, Dean Bennett, Andy Ferrell and Matthew Barnes-Homer all going close in the opening 10 minutes as play-off contenders Exeter City struggled to get out of their own half.

Iyseden Christie and Simon Russell fired narrowly wide and Russ Penn was only inches away when flinging himself full length to meet Christie's centre.

The second half was a different story, barely two minutes had been played when Wayne Carlisle's looping header from Rob Edwards' centre rebounded back off the Harriers bar.

On 57 minutes the deadlock was broken. Tully's long ball was chested into the path of Gill by Dean Moxey and the midfielder stormed into the area before driving the ball past MacKenzie.

In the closing minutes Harriers could have grabbed a point but Simon Russell chose to place the ball to Andy Marriott's left when a deft chip would have provided an equaliser.

Iyseden Christie forced Marriott to tip around a glancing header and from McGrath's corner Darryl Knights poked the ball over as Exeter held on.

Harriers: MacKenzie, Kenna, Hurren, Creighton, Jeannin, Russell, Bennett, Ferrell (Smikle 76), Penn (McGrath 85), Christie, Barnes-Homer (Knights 72). Subs Not Used; Coleman, Bignot.
