Not only did they suffer their second 5-1 home defeat in three months, Rangers also sunk to the foot of the table after basement side Droylsden beat Kidderminster.

While Stafford created and missed more chances in the first half, Salisbury clinically put away theirs to take a three-goal lead.

Marco Adaggio came on and immediately reduced the deficit – only for the visitors to complete the rout with two further goals.

Mid-table Salisbury, who went into the game on the back of a run of six games without defeat, took a fourth minute lead.

Andrew Sandell's long throw fell perfectly for Matt Tubbs to hook home from 10 yards out.

Damion Jarrett impressed down the right and he delivered a perfect cross which Dolapo Oloaye headed over.

But the visitors made Stafford suffer again in the 24th minute. Sandell was again the provider as he set up Tubbs to smash a right-foot shot into the net from the edge of the area.

Rangers created enough chances to get on the scoresheet in a good spell around the half hour mark.

Ross Draper and David McNiven both headed wide while Matt Hazley curled a 25-yard free-kick into the arms of Ryan Clarke.

Salisbury, however, continued to be lethal in front of goal and added a third in the 44th minute. Sandell's low cross was laid back for Fowler to drive home.

Adaggio replaced Olaoye at half-time and reduced the deficit just 57 seconds after the restart. Draper won the ball in the air and allowed Adaggio to battle past Wayne Turk inside the area before stabbing home.

The goal gave Stafford hope and the lively Adaggio volleyed over Jarrett's cross.

Just before the hour mark, Jarrett's cross caused problems and Hazley saw a shot cleared off the line.

Salisbury survived the pressure and restored their three-goal advantage in the 71st minute. Substitute Robert Matthews curled a 25-yard free-kick in between the left-hand post and the fingertips of Alcock.

And the keeper was powerless to prevent Liam Feeney from netting his side's fifth in injury time.
