Moneybags Yeltz are big scalp
High-flying Halesowen have been warned that their "moneybags" reputation will make them the prize Southern League scalp as they chase promotion.
The Yeltz began today level on points with leaders Kings Lynn at the top.
But long-serving general manager Colin Brookes has warned that staying at the top will prove even tougher than getting there, with the injection of cash from Morell Maison's consortium giving extra motivation to opponents.
However, he has backed manager Maison and his player as the perfect men to stay focused. Brookes said: "Ever since we became a high-profile club a few months ago, teams have wanted to beat us even more because of that profile.
"I'd imagine every opposition manager will mention the word 'moneybags' in his team talk and try to use it to wind up his players.
"We would do the same in their shoes, so we haven't got a problem with that.
"They will be telling their players to go out and make sure we earn our money.
"We are a scalp now at this level, but that is only because we have got the results to make ourselves a scalp, so we should be proud of what we are achieving here.
"Now the players have to carry on handling it to stay at the top. And Morell and Darren Caskey, the player-coach, are not fools.
"They know what the opposition managers will be saying and they'll have the players ready to cope with it."
Meanwhile, Brookes has welcomed the news that former Wycombe goalkeeper Mark Osborn has turned his loan from Histon into a permanent deal until the end of the season.
The 26-year-old former Chairboys man has impressed during three months on loan and Brookes is delighted he has made a longer-term switch.
He said: "Both Mark Osborn and Darren Caskey have decided to stay for the rest of the season at least and it is great news for the club.
"Mark seems to have been a steadying influence on the young defenders in our side and we have won 10 of the last 13 games with him in goal.
"Both he and Darren have been big influences."
