The Yeltz have climbed from mid-table to second in the British Gas Business League since Maison took over three months ago.

And the manager is now confident his reshaped side can mount a serious challenge for promotion to the second tier of the Conference.

But he believes they have get to click into top gear – and is predicting continued improvements during the remainder of the season.

"We have been on a sharp learning curve and we have been coming from behind the eight-ball," said Maison.

"But this is the way I look at it – when I came here Hemel Hempstead were top of the league and they had 13 points more than us and three games in hand.

"Brackley were second, Team Bath were third and KIngs Lynn were fourth.

"I told everyone we could catch Hemel Hempstead and they all told me I must be mad because effectively they had to drop 21 points.

"Now we're four points ahead of them having played the the same number of games, so it just goes to show what you can achieve if you set targets and believe in them.

"Now we are in the top two, and although some of the teams below us have a few games in hand we are still pleased with the position we are in.

"Most of the teams around us still have to play us so we can take points off them.

"And a lot if them still have to play each other in those games in hand so they are guaranteed to drop points along the way.

'I said when I came here that if we could be in among the play-off contenders by Christmas we could try to push on and turn it into a challenge for the title in the second half of the season.

"Here we are in early January and we're up near the top of the table and in the play-off places, so I still believe that the title challenge is possible.

"The great thing from our point of view as that we have picked up some good results but we still haven't played at our best yet."

"I know there is still more to come from this group of players and when they produced that we should get even better."

Maison has boosted his striking options by signing former Wycombe winger Ikechi Anya.

Maison has secured Anya's services after a three-week race with Basingstoke to sign him.

"He is seriously quick," said Maison. "Pigeons quake with fear when they see him coming.

"But he also has very good feet and can go past players.

"We have been trying to sign him for a few weeks and we have had to compete with Basingstoke to get him.

"But we are delighted he has decided to join us and we think he could be a real crowd-pleaser."

Anya became Wycombe's youngest ever player at the age of 16 in 2004 but he was released this summer.
