Stafford Rangers' caretaker duo Neil Grayson and Kevin Street have been given the thumbs-up as they prepare to tackle Blue Square Premier leaders Aldershot tomorrow.
More than a dozen serious applications for Phil Robinson's old job have hit the mat at Marston Road, but chairman Jon Downing says the caretakers are getting first shot to stake their claim.
"They took charge at very short notice and we are lucky to have such experienced players doing the job," said Downing, who went with the rest of the board to watch the pair in action at training on Tuesday night.
"I was very impressed. Neil is really fired up to get some wins under our belts and Kevin has some new ideas to work on.
"We've had about 12 applications and I would say there are three or four who are well known in the football trade.
"But things are settling down a bit because we have Neil and Kevin, they have the respect of the players and they know their habits.
"We'll probably go two to three weeks and if it's not looking good we'll review the situation, but if the lads work hard, we may well decide to extend it," said Downing.
The caretakers face the toughest of tests away to hot championship favourites Aldershot tomorrow.
"We're going from one extreme to the other," said Grayson, referring to last weekend's 0-0 draw with bottom of the table Northwich.
"It's going to be a difficult game, but hopefully we can come away with something."
Jimi Sangare's medical check has revealed he had not broken his nose against Northwich last week and will be fit to play. Midfielder Sebastian Arnolin comes back into contention after completing his loan with Hednesford.
With keeper Scott Loach back at Watford, Danny Alcock will be back on duty, shadowed by youth team keeper Danny Allen, who signed BSP forms this week.
Winger Chris Humphrey has also returned to his club, Shrewsbury, leaving Luke Potter as the only loan player left in the squad.
