The Kidderminster striker pounced in the 59th minute to send the U's tumbling to only their second defeat of the season.

But Harriers had to ride their luck and were heavily indebted to a man-of-the-match display by goalkeeper Scott Bevan.

He made a string of excellent saves to keep Cambridge at bay in an entertaining clash which was watched by Mick McCarthy as part of his preparations for Wolves' third round tie against Jimmy Quinn's high-flyers at Molineux in the new year.

Although their run of six victoriescame to an end, the U's turned in a lively televised performance which went unrewarded after putting Kidderminster under intense pressure during the second half.

But Harriers stuck doggedly to their task to record their first home league victory since beating Halifax 1-0 on October 9.

They set the scene in the second minute when central defender Mark Creighton planted a header against the bar.

Leo Fortune-West and Darryl Knights then wasted a couple of decent chances for Cambridge. But Bevan began to have a major impact on the game in the 43rd minute when he reacted swiftly to push a shot from Rob Wolleaston on to the post .

Third-placed Cambridge were finally undone by a Simon Russell free- kick which gave Richards the opportunity for Christie to score in his first appearance in the starting line-up for a league game this season.

On 73 minutes Bevan pushed away a Lee Boylan shot before Paul Bignot blocked Mark Peters follow-up effort on the line.

A minute later Peters had a shot hit the underside of the bar before Bevan pulled off another fine save to deny Scott Rendall.

Harriers also survived a late goalmouth scramble to lift themselves up to 10th spot.
