The news today took Wolves by surprise. Chief executive Jez Moxey admitted he knew nothing about any link to the South Korean job and was this morning hurriedly preparing a statement on the matter.
KFA spokesman You Young-chul said: "A final decision will be made very soon. It's 50-50 between the two."
The Korean FA president Chung Mong-joon added: "About 80 per cent of the process is complete.
"Each of the candidates have clarified their stance over the job and right now we are on the final stages of working out a contract."
It is the first time candidates for the job have been named since the departure of Dutch coach Pim Verbeek at the end of July's Asian Cup.
Former Ireland manager McCarthy, aged 48, took over from Glenn Hoddle last summer. Only last week, the popular boss spoke of how he was loving his life in Wolverhampton.
McCarthy said: "I am really enjoying it here and everyone has been very welcoming to me and my wife,"
Retired school teacher John Lalley, 54, who has been a Wolves fan for 47 years and is a current season ticket holder said today: "This news is a bombshell - but I would suggest that Houllier is the favourite of the two names mentioned.
"Mick is in credit with the supporters and I am confident that he will still be the Wolves manager this time next week."
