Tired legs behind Rangers exit

Stafford Rangers boss Phil Robinson blamed tired legs after his side crashed out of the FA Cup exit at Cambridge United last night.

Rangers were thumped 5-1 at the Abbey Stadium after seeing their hopes all but ended by conceding three goals in a 15 minute spell before half-time.

Robinson had seen his side hold United to two 1-1 draws in the league and cup at Marston Road already this month.

And he insisted Rangers' recent heavy workload proved too much for them as they missed out on a first tround tie with Aldershot Town.

"You could tell the difference tonight between a full-time and a part-time team," said Robinson.

"I think that midweek games after a hard game the previous Saturday catch part-time teams out."

After staring at defeat at half-time, Rangers were given a glimmer of hope when Kevin Street pulled a goal back just after the hour mark.

But Cambridge hit back with two more goals of their own to put the result beyond doubt, even if Robinson was happy enough with the effort of his players.

"We had a go in the second half, created some good opportunities but gave away some sloppy goals which cost us," added Robinson.

The Rangers boss, who handed a debut to recent signing Samy Mawene at the Abbey Stadium, must now lift his side ahead on Saturday's home game with Exeter City.

Mawene put in an encouraging performance up front in place of injured Marco Adaggio.
