Harriers man hungry for spot

Kidderminster midfielder Andy Ferrell reckons he is hungrier than ever for action - after getting a 'kick up the backside' from manager Mark Yates.

Ferrell reckons being dropped after the first match of the new season spurred him on to produce his best performance yet in Harriers colours.

And the 23-year-old Geordie is now keen to build on his impressive display in Harriers' victory at Rushden and Diamonds on Monday.

"I thought it was my best game personally since I've been here," said the midfielder.

"I don't think I played very well in the last friendly and against Aldershot and the gaffer left me out for a couple of games which I think probably did me good.

"I came back hungry on Monday.

"As a team I thought we were fantastic and now we've got to make sure we keep building on it."

And Ferrell, who signed permanently from Hereford in the summer after a loan spell last season, is also keen to cement his midfield partnership with Gavin Hurren.

Hurren has been freed up to return to midfield with all of the club's defenders now fit, and the pair combined in the centre at Nene Park with Russ Penn switched to a wide right role.

Ferrell said: "I thought we did well together and had a good understanding - we knew when to go forward and when to sit back.

"If he missed his tackle I would be there and if I missed a header he'd be there for the second ball and Russ did magnificently out wide too.

"As a team we performed well.

"There's competition all the way through the squad and players like Michael McGrath and Jon Munday, who haven't been on the bench for the past couple of games, are capable of coming in.

"There's a lot going for every place in the team."

Manager Yates was also full of praise for his battling side after they returned to winning ways at Rushden following three defeats in their opening four matches.

"We are a good team when we do the ugly side of football right and we weren't doing that in our first four games," said Yates.

"But against Rushden we defended very well and went from there.

"Hopefully that's the real Kidderminster Harriers coming out and we can build on it.

"It has bothered me why we have made such a poor start.

"You watch the players in training every day and to be fair to them they have been superb, but they then go and produce four very disappointing performances.

"We didn't really change that much before the Rushden game, just worked on a couple of small things, but then we go and produce a great performance."
