A slowly rising River Severn above the town attracted 50 entries to the latest Bridgnorth Angling Club's open match.

It was pegged along the right bank above the town where local lad Richard Duke was a clear winner with 73-2-0.

Drawn at noted peg number 28 in a bay. Faced with a 16ft deep swim he decided to use a sliding float to offer alternated worms, maggots and sweetcorn on a size 13 hook close to the river bed.

It was a good move which attracted 12 barbel to 8lbs plus nine chub.

Chris Simmonds from Northwich was second with 62-2-0 off the next peg 29 where he hooked similar sized barbel with pellets and boilies.

Third man Keith Russell (B'ham) at peg 64 known as the Fallen Ash, was next with 60-1-0 (ten barbel to 8-4-0) and then came Martin Taylor (Bromsgrove) 43-6-0, Dan George (Bridgnorth) 41-14-0 and Richard Davies (Wales) 39-3-0.

• Heavy boat traffic put paid to hopes of good catches at Bilston Angling's open match and a modest 4-12-0 effort clinched first place for Paul Ross.

The Wolverhampton member of the Shakespeare team took advantage of an end peg towards the Marsh Lane area.

Relying on squatt maggot feed and bait he caught a brace of skimmer bream plus small roach, perch and gudgeon.

Second placed Ian Hingley (Dudley Bait and Tackle) took his 4-9-9 catch of roach from a peg under the big tree on the bend where he hooked all roach with caster bait and feed.

Another in-form Shakespeare team stalwart, Dave McCall was third with 4-7-5 over Dave Holbrook (Brownhills) 3-14-5, Dennis Kneller (W B Clarke) 3-12-12 and Kevin Perry (ZLT Angling Products) 3-11-12.

• West Bromwich based Dave Angel headed a disappointing Wolverhampton Over 55s contest with a 5-4-4 mixed bag from the Staffs Worcester canal at Penkridge.

The match was held along the stretch between the Crossover bridge and the Mount Hotel where the Insurance Factory team member drew peg No 2.

Relying on ordinary white maggots,he hooked small roach, gudgeon and perch plus a brace of skimmer bream.

Second man Don Wood (Midleisure) weighed in 4-5-4 of roach with a combination of punched bread hookbait over squatt maggots and a little groundbait feed.

Bilston tackle dealer John Hall filled third place with 3-14-6 over Carl Davies (Bilston Angling) 3-9-10, Tony Wordley (Gailey) 3-9-2 and Stuart Mincher (Brittons Tackle) 3-7-10.

• In-form Dave McCall topped the catch list in a practice match for the second round of the Sensas Dams & Lock league held on the Birmingham Fazeley canal at Tyburn.

He led the scoring with a 5-10-12 catch of mixed small fish. Pegged at No 147, he caught mostly small roach with a few perch taken on punched bread and squats.

A similar 4-5-12 bag gave Jason Jeans (Browning Central) second place over John Gaylord (Daiwa Gordon League) 4-3-0, Kevin Rennie (Sensas R & D) 4-0-14, Paul Ross (Shakespeare) 4-0-8 and Neal Crewe (Daiwa Gordon League) 4-0-7.

• The Shropshire Union canal at Grubb Street near Norbury was in fine fettle and produced some excellent hauls in a Stoke City AC contest.

Clear winner with 8-6-0 was Stafford-based Dean Williams (Colmic Isaac Walton) who drew peg No 4.

Relying on small squatt maggots he hooked small roach, skimmer bream, gudgeon and a 2lb bream in the last ten minutes.

Veteran Fred 'The Bread' Cheetham (Eclipse) was second with 6-14-0 from a peg towards Saddle bridge.

He relied on his favouite punched bread to tempt skimmer bream and roach.

Stafford's Alan Round (W B Clarke) was third with 6-14-0 which included a 2lb bream.

Bob Edgerton (Colmic Isaac Walton) 6-7-12 and Frank Holding from Tadcaster with 6-7-3 claimed the last two prizes.

• The Fenton and District AC open match on the Trent and Mersey canal at Burnington Drive near Trentham was won by organising club member Bob Cartwright with 8-9-12.

He caught three bream to 2 lbs plus a brace of skimmers and small fish with red maggots.

Fred Cheetham (Eclipse) was a clear second with 8-2-0, one bream plus roach taken with alternated punched bread and hempseed.

Stafford's Tony Keeling (Eclipse) was third with 6-7-0 over Pete Johansson (Eclipse) 6-0-0 and Joe Nicholls (Fosters) 5-0-0.

• The annual Carnival Cup fixture at Hawkstone Park attracted 47 entries, many of them from the north and one of these, Mike Risby, clinched the top prize.

His 67-4-0 catch of bream to 5 lbs. Gary Bough (Birkenhead) and Dan Renshaw (Edgley Sports) shared second spot both with 19-8-0, again all bream.

Other prizes went to Chris Smith (Birkenhead A C) 18-5-0; John Dearhurst (Birkenhead A C) 18-2-0 and Keith Dyatt (Edgley Sports) 18-0-0.
