Stafford - report

Stafford Rangers dealt themselves a potentially winning hand - but failed to play the Cards right and ended up stripped bare of points.

The third striaght Blue Square Premier defeat for Phil Robinson's side followed the same suit as the others - missed tricks and lapses of concentration during the game.

Even goal-aces David McNiven and Neil Grayson failed to come up trumps in Saturday's setback.

Each of them missed from scorable positions against a Woking team whose main tactic appeared to be to bore the opposition into submission.

Football is often an unfair game and Robinson and his players must feel that, after the 30 second half seconds which decided the outcome.

It was in the 54th minute, to be precise, that McNiven superbly set up Greg Stones in the box for what should have been the opening, and probably winning goal.

Unfortunately for Rangers, keeper Nick Gindre pulled off one of those once-a-season saves that can make fans weep.

But the real tears came seconds later as, from the cleanrance, Cards' dangerman Marvin Morgan caught Rangers defenders open mouthed and streaked away to score.

The double whammy just about scuppered any chance Rangers had of posting their first win of the season.

The only question remaining was whether they could salavage their first point.

The answer should have been a resounding 'yes', because with ten minutes left, Craig McAughtrie hooked back a free kick from Stones to Grayson on the six yard line.

The 42-year-old veteran hammered it over the bar.

The worrying thing for Robinson is if it becomes a trend rather than a temporary problem, draining away the confidence to create the chances.

The clutch of new players have yet to mesh together and there were more injury problems for the Rangers boss when Djoumin Sangare limped off in the second half with a groin strain.

Woking's Matt Pattinson was sent off near the end for timewasting.

Rangers: Alcock, Sangare (Richards 57), McAughtrie, Daniel, Sutton, Arnolin (Adaggio 69), Stones, Flynn, Hazley (Hopkinson 56), Grayson, McNiven. Subs Not Used: Duggan, Manak.
