The rivals cemented their place in the race for a place in the Premiership with convincing wins on the last day of the season.

The pair now play each other over two legs - the first next Sunday - for the chance to get into the final - with the ultimate prize of £60m for the overall winner.

Pride of place went to Albion who beat Barnsley 7-0 at The Hawthorns with Kevin Phillips bagging a hat-trick.

The Baggies other goals were scored by Nathan Ellington (2), Zoltan Gera and Robert Koren.

Not to be outdone, Wolves ran out 4-1 winners at Leicester.

Iain Hulme had put Leicester ahead in the third minute but Wolves struck back with Seyi Olofinjana, Michael Kightly, Andy Keogh and a Gareth McAuley own goal to ease any fears that Wolves' huge travelling army of fans might have had.

To make matters worse Leicester had Patrick Kisnorbo sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the second half.

In the other play-off match Derby, who beat Leeds 1-0, will play Southampton, who had to come from a goal behind to beat Southend 4-1.

Elsewhere, Blues lost the chance to claim the Championship title when they lost 1-0 at Preston North End with Simon Whaley getting the goal for the Lilywhites.

The result meant joy for Roy Keane's Sunderland who were 5-0 winners against Luton at Kenilworth Road.
