Rangers boss counts the cost

Stafford Rangers are counting the cost of a vital Conference win over Grays Athletic at Marston Road on Saturday which edged them nearer to safety.

Teenage keeper Robbie Duggan played on despite suffering a serious shoulder injury and midfielder Levi Reid had to quit the game after just nine minutes with a groin strain.

Duggan, who is on loan from Stoke City, was hurt as a result of a reckless first half challenge from Grays' Matt Bodkin, who was booked.

But manager Phil Robinson said: "I think it deserved a red card."

Duggan is the third Rangers keeper to be injured this season.

Dean Williams hasn't played first team football since September and deputy Danny Alcock, whose performances earned him an England XI call up, is only just on the mend from a chest injury.

Both Duggan and Reid will be battling to be fit for another relegation 'six-pointer' at Altrincham tomorrow night.

However, Robinson said that if Duggan was ruled out, Alcock would step in to replace him.

The Rangers boss praised his players for their 4-2 win over Grays, which lifted them into 15 place in the table:

"It's such a different feeling at Marston Road now, back-to-back victories, an away draw sandwiched in between, and we're enjoying that feeling," he said.

"We played some good stuff going forward and looked like scoring quite a few times. Guy Madjo caused them a lot of problems today and got in a lot of good positions."

New signing Andy White, who has joined Rangers on loan from Kidderminster, saw no action and spent the afternoon on the bench.
