Two first half goals from Jamal Campbell-Ryce - his first for four years - and a third from Lewis Hunt upset the form book as the Championship's bottom club brought Albion's six game unbeaten run to a grinding halt.
Albion replied through John Hartson after the break as they eventually went down 3-1 at Roots Hall.
But Davies admitted they had wasted a glorious chance to keep up the pressure at the top of the table on a day when Derby were the only top six side to win."It's taken some of the gloss off Christmas because we saw this as a good opportunity to come and win against the team bottom of the league - but they've turned us over," said the defender.
"An outsider looking at the score at half-time would have thought 'what a shambles'. It's actually embarassing.
"I came here with Luton years ago and we won 3-0 comfortably, but I'm playing in a much better side now against a similar side that played then and we're getting turned over 3-0 at half-time.
"It's something we need to put right very soon."
Albion's defeat at Southend was their seventh game without a win on the road - a run in which they've only taken two points on their travels.
And Davies insisted that was a statistic only the players can remedy - or risk derailing their promotion hopes. "It's something as players we should have got right ages ago," he added.
"You can't go halfway through a season and only win two games away from home. Our home form is unbelievable and even if we'd only drawn a few more games away from home we would be right in amongst it.
"But we're losing games away from home because of sloppy mistakes and silly errors."
