Veteran Oldfield believes Rangers have the personnel to upset League One Brighton when they travel to the Withdean Stadium for their second round clash at the weekend.

But Phil Robinson's right-hand man believes the players must relax on the big stage to reproduce their Conference form.

"The cup game is a big game," said the former Manchester City and Luton man."It's a big game financially for the club which hopefully could give the manager a few more options and few more decisions to make if his budget gets increased.

"But it's a big game for the fans, it's great to get a League club and it's a good opportunity for us to go and play. The league is vitally important for us. We're mid-table and everybody is scrambling to get as high as possible, but this is a game we're all looking forward to.

"I will tell them to play how we can play, to give a good account of ourselves and not to be overawed by the occasion. The Withdean Stadium gets some abuse but I think it's fine and Brighton is a great club and it's a good opportunity for us to go there and perform. If we can do that then we've got half a chance."

Oldfield was appointed as Robinson's assistant in the summer to replace Paul Groves, who joined Harry Redknapp's backroom team at Portsmouth. And the 38-year-old admitted it has taken him some time to adjust from his last job, as player-coach at full-time Oxford, to working in the part-time game at Marston Road.

"It's been a learning curve, certainly, on work timing and how the lads are but they combine the two very well and they are competing well in the Conference so there have been no complaints about that," he said.

"It has been an interesting time for me, but it's been great and I've really enjoyed it."
