Howe's about a different deal?

Wolves speedway rider David Howe is looking to set off a chain reaction - by bringing a major Indian company into speedway.

Howe is in the process of concluding an innovative sponsorship deal with LG Balakrishnan and Bros Ltd.

The firm already manufactures Rolon motorcycle chains and sprockets - and is looking to break into the shale sport.

Howe is providing technical specifications, expertise and an intense programme of winter testing for the product.

In return the rider, who spent the 2006 season on loan at Oxford, will be sponsored for all chains and sprockets throughout next season.

It's a big challenge for LGB in a market currently dominated by Italian manufacturer Regina. Speedway engines are 500cc with single gearing and the chain takes an enormous amount of strain.

But the Indian firm is a major player, with seven factories, extensive experience and a big emphasis on research and development. It has posted pre-tax profits of around £7m on a £55m turnover and its experts are confident that they are up to the task.

Mr P Prabakaran, chief operating officer for the transmission division, said: "We had no hesitation in offering the sponsorship which will include chains and sprockets as we believe we can manufacture and supply a very reliable product that will be cost-effective.

"We are probably the first Indian company to be involved in speedway and want to help David to achieve his potential in the sport."

Chains are a major outlay for speedway riders, costing £35-40 each.

"The drive chain would be changed every five meetings and the primary chain a few more," said Howe.

"It all depends on the wear and how they stretch.

"The sprockets and chains take a hammering because of the amount of torque provided by a speedway engine.

"I have supplied the technical department with the specifications and I will be working closely with them in the production.

"I will be testing the chains and sprockets provided in the winter months and liaising with the technical department if any improvements are required.

"They appear really keen on producing a reliable chain."
