Bason's triumph is lap of honour
An emphatic win for Wrekinsport's Andy Bason took on the feel of a lap of honour in the third SCCA Autumn 10 at Waters Upton as the curtain fell on Shropshire's time trialling season.
Bason powered home in 21mins 57secs to prevail with a dominant performance and seal victory in the Parker International Series by a clear 30 points.
Finishing 1:09 ahead of clubmate Mark Griffiths, Bason was just 12 seconds outside the course record on a mild Saturday afternoon, with a light easterly wind assuring good times.
North Shropshire Wheelers' Bryan Cliff turned up just in time to get a start at the rear of the field and, with the adrenalin flowing, managed to finish third and elevate himself into the veteran's bronze medal position as a result.
Edged out
His ride of 23:13 edged out Oswestry's Neil Coles by a solitary second whilst demoting veterans series winner Robin Shedden to fifth a further 25 seconds back.
Cliff's late arrival stopped Ludlow's Gary McDonald from taking the veterans' bronze after he pulled out a great ride - and finally got one over on son Ewen in the process following a season-long battle.
The younger McDonald gained the consolation of being named junior inter-club champion to add to his selection as part of the British Cycling Talent Team.
Best improvement of the day went to Oswestry's Helen Tudor, slicing an excellent 1:29 from her previous effort to stop the clock in 27:56 and end the season on a high by capturing ladies inter-club gold.
