Rod & Gun shoot to lead
Rod & Gun put in an outstanding performance at the second round of the Shropshire Winter League, to win the round by twelve clear points, and move to the top of the table.
Eric Bancroft headed the team victory with an individual top spot, and was backed up by Scott Doodson, who was second.
Eric was pegged on the small Acorn Pool, but not in one of the more fancied corner pegs, he was on peg three, backing on to the track, but caught well almost from the off, and included a lot of small silver fish, as well as carp to 6lbs in a 95-9-0 net.
Scott was on the Sycamore Pool, at peg 48, and finished 20lbs clear of anyone else on the pool by scaling 91-7-0. Tipton team man Ian Lockley was a close third with a Chestnut best of 90-7-8, with Tipton skipper Scott Geens in fourth. His 83-3-0 also came from the Chestnut.
Top rod on the Willows Pool was Kevin Melville, who helped Dorset AC to improve on their first round showing with a fifth overall, 80-10-0. Steve Thorpe (Phoenix MG) added a sixth place to his section win on the first round with 79-11-8 from the Chestnut.
Rod & Gun had four section wins, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth to finish with 21 points, Mosella Strike recovered from a disappointing first round to take second with 33.
Tipton slipped to third on 34, Dorset can be fairly pleased with fourth with 41, Phoenix Tackle were fifth on 45, Phoenix MG will be disappointed with their 50 for sixth, and Hodnet are still looking for their form, finishing sixth on 56.
l With the river still rising and coloured at Shrewsbury on Saturday, the Quarry open was cancelled but at Bridgnorth on Sunday, levels were dropping a little, but there was still plenty of colour in the water.
That suited the barbel at the bottom of Linley island, and Dave George (W'hampton) hauled in 15 fish, using feeder and pellet, for 73-6-0, which gave him a comfortable win. Dave's catch included his best ever barbel, a superb specimen of 10-12-0.
Kelvin Hughes (Chester) had six good barbel from the slack at the bottom of the channel, to head a string of four close weights in the remaining frame places.
He scaled 38-0-0, and was followed by Ian Courtney (Birkenhead) on 35-5-0 at the willows. In fourth place was Paul Davis (Kingswinford) with a level 33-0-0, and Mark Beard (Bell Otters) completed the line up with 32-12-0.
