Old boy back at Wolves

British hotshot Simon Stead returns to Monmore tonight - to ride for Wolves. The former Wolf was strongly tipped for a long stay at the club but eventually opted for Belle Vue due to promotional ties with his Premier League side Workington.

The Monmore specialist steps in for Wolves skipper Peter Karlsson in the Craven Shield home leg against Eastbourne and Ipswich (7.30pm).

Karlsson, still struggling with a knee ligament problem, is consulting a specialist on the possible use of a brace to help him make the away legs at Ipswich on Thursday and Eastbourne on Saturday.

It's a night of old favourites returning as popular Wolves asset Adam Skornicki, on loan at Oxford, guests for Ipswich in place of collarbone victim Chris Louis.

And Nicki Pedersen, yet another man on Wolves' books, spearheads Eastbourne's challenge.

The Dane, who has featured in cracking races and controversy at Monmore this season, arrives fresh from his weekend victory in the Polish Grand Prix at Bydgoszcz.

The victory confirmed his third place in the series behind world champion Jason Crump and Greg Hancock.

Another to enjoy a title-winning weekend was Wolves' Christian Hefenbrock.

He finished runner-up in the German under-21 championship to Thomas Stange with Kevin Wolbert third and Tobias Kroner fourth but then took the national senior championship.

With Kroner second and Stange third, ahead of Martin Smolinski, it meant that three of the under-21 finalists reached the final of the main event - a strong pointer to the large number of young Germans making the breakthrough.

Wolves: Simon Stead, Ronnie Correy, Billy Hamill, Christian Hefenbrock, Freddie Lindgren, William Lawson.

Eastbourne: Adam Shields, Dean Barker, Nicki Pedersen, Lewis Bridger, David Norris, Edward Kennett.

Ipswich: Piotr Protasiewicz, Adam Skornicki, Robert Miskowiak, Kim Jansson, Mark Loram, Daniel King.
