Wolves snatch last-heat win
Wolves 47 Ipswich 46 (Ipswich win bonus point 97-88) As they used to say about surprise victories in 1950s New York boxing circles, the cow got loose and killed the butcher.
In fact, for much of the meeting Wolves were less the cow than the sacrificial lamb - and Ipswich were happy to get on with the slaughtering.
Last night's single point success, overturning a deficit of TEN over the final three heats, all but defied belief.
The yawning chasm in the scoresheet between Wolves' mighty top three and the second strings/reserves meant Ipswich could virtually write their own scoresheet in heat 12.
A cuter - or, more cynical side - would have lined up a 4-2 to extend their six-point advantage to eight and rule out a double-point tactical ride for the home side.
Ipswich, however, played it straight.
