The programme will also feature two leading supermarkets to discover how they choose new meal deal items and it will be revealed which combination comes out on top after polling hundreds of people from across Britain.

Swash said: “We all love making our money go further so it’s no surprise meal deals have conquered British lunchtimes.

“It’s great to be working with Channel 4 again, this time getting the scoop from insiders on what shoppers around the country are putting in their baskets.”

The actor rose to fame playing Mickey Miller in the BBC soap EastEnders and later won the eighth series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2008 and Dancing On Ice in 2020.

He previously presented a number of children’s programmes including game show Gimme A Break and driving show Driving Academy.

Swash has recently co-presented a new Channel 4 show with family-cooking expert Suzanne Mulholland titled Batch From Scratch: Cooking For Less, which features tips and recipes on how to batch cook.

Channel 4’s senior commissioning editor for lifestyle, Clemency Green, said: “‘What’s your favourite meal deal?’ is the question that can spark impassioned debate in every corner of this country.

“There might be millions of combinations, but surely a prawn mayo sandwich is non-negotiable? We’re really looking forward to working with Purple Productions and our intrepid investigator Joe to bring Channel 4 viewers the most surprising revelations about this very British consumer obsession.”

Executive producer for Purple Productions, Pam Cavannagh, added: “We have become fascinated by the cult-like status of meal deals – it’s a uniquely British phenomenon that has shoppers of all ages and statuses around the country hooked.

“We’re delighted to have Joe on board as an inquisitive host asking the experts questions consumers want to know and uncovering some astonishing answers along the way.”
