Comedy Brassic with Michelle Keegan and Joe Gilgun ending after seventh series
Gilgun, known for Preacher and Misfits, created the show with Shameless writer Danny Brocklehurst.
Hit Sky comedy show Brassic is coming to an end with a final seventh season as the creators want to “stop while we are still riding high”.
With a cast led by Joseph “Joe” Gilgun and Michelle Keegan, the series follows a group of cash-strapped working-class friends living in the fictional village of Hawley.
Gilgun, known for Preacher and Misfits, created the show with Shameless writer Danny Brocklehurst.
Brocklehurst said: “When Joe Gilgun and I sat down to create Brassic, we couldn’t have imagined, in our wildest dreams, that we would do seven series and gather such a loyal and loving fan base.
“It’s been a complete joy to create this eccentric world, but all good things must come to an end, and we want to stop while we are still riding high. Maybe they can finally give us that Bafta.”
Since the first series began in 2019, it has been nominated for four TV Baftas with all nods for Gilgun for male performance in a comedy, and National Television Awards.
It did win best comedy drama at the 2023 Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards.
Former Coronation Street star Keegan plays Erin, a young woman whose troubled childhood leads to a wild teenage phase and an unplanned pregnancy, and Gilgun portrays Vincent “Vinnie” O’Neill, the leader of a gang that causes mischief with hairbrained schemes.
Returning for the farewell series is Plebs star Ryan Sampson (Tommo), Keegan, Irish actor Aaron Heffernan (Ashley), Gangs Of London actor Parth Thakerar (JJ), Shameless actress Joanna Higson (Sugar), and Rev actor Steve Evets (Jim).
David Livingstone, founder of Brassic’s production company Calamity Films, said: “Somehow, some crazy stories and a bucketful of truth, combined with an astoundingly talented cast, have created the most loyal fanbase you could ever hope for.
“From Joe Gilgun’s unconventional imagination to Danny Brocklehurst’s brilliant writing, it’s all been a blast. This farewell series is for the fans.”
A Sky spokesperson said: “Since Brassic arrived on our screens in 2019, it has become Sky’s most successful comedy ever.
“Fans very quickly became attached to this dynamic group of friends, as they found unconventional ways to win at life in northern suburbia.
“We would like to thank Joe Gilgun, Danny Brocklehurst and the whole cast and crew – past and present – for bringing us all a truly iconic series, which we’ve loved for its special mix of hilarity and heart.”
The final series will air later in 2025, and is promised to go out in “unforgettable Brassic style”.
English actor Gilgun is also known for the series This Is England, along with his parts in soaps Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, and for portraying an depressive and substance abusing vampire in supernatural show Preacher opposite Dominic Cooper.
Keegan has also starred in Netflix’s Fool Me Once, Ten Pound Poms, a drama about a group of Brits who decide to leave post-war Britain, and hit army drama Our Girl.
Last year, she said she was expecting her first child with husband Mark Wright, who rose to fame on the reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex.
