Zoe Croft, 16, of Myddle, near Wem, came down with what doctors thought was a virus or possibly asthma five weeks ago. But just days later Zoe, a pupil at Corbet School in Baschurch, was fighting for her life in a hospital bed after suffering heart failure. Her illness then caused her heart to swell to three times its normal size. After finding a suitable donor, Zoe has battled against the odds and has since come out of intensive care and is now recovering at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.[24link]

The drastic measure came after Zoe felt ill for several weeks complaining of a shortness of breath and other symptoms. Initially it was thought she had asthma or a viral infection, but it transpired that Zoe's heart was failing resulting in her having to undergo emergency surgery. Friends and fellow pupils at Corbet School in Baschurch clubbed together to hold a non-uniform day and cake sale to raise money, which will mostly be donated to the British Heart Foundation and other charities chosen by Zoe.[24link]

Daniel Beeson, 34, of Shepherds Lane, Bicton, was snared in a major operation led by London's Metropolitan Police aimed at catching online sex offenders, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told. Beeson, who admitted attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a child sex offence, was given a three-year supervision order and told to attend a community sex offenders group work programme. He must also notify police of any change of address for the next five years and must pay £1,200 court costs. Mr Denis Desmond, prosecuting, said the offence happened between February and October 2008. Read more in the Shropshire Star
