Hundreds of eager shoppers queued up for the grand opening of the centre at 10am.

One of those was 63-year-old Derek Hamblin from Stirchley who said he was wowed by the project.

Mr Hamblin said: "It's unbelievable, there's no words to described it.

"It's a massive improvement on what we had with the old station but I didn't expect it to be anything like this.

"I don't think anybody could have a bad word to say about it - you can't fault it."

The cornerstone of Grand Central is the enormous flagship 250,000 sq ft John Lewis store which makes up about half of the shopping space.

Head of branch Lisa Williams who said the shop is 'stunning' and 'truly pioneering'.
