A lorry hit railings, causing jams in Wolverhampton, when a sat-nav instructed its foreign driver to do a U-turn.

Access to Broad Street from Stafford Street was obstructed after the HGV crashed outside the Hogshead pub at around 3.40pm yesterday.

No-one was injured in the smash and the driver admitted he had accidentally driven into the city centre and his sat-nav said he should make a u-turn before the collision.

Police were on the scene directing traffic around the crash and traffic continued to flow.

The driver of the lorry, a Romanian national who didn't wish to be named, said: "I was supposed to go to Bridgnorth. I drove into Wolverhampton and my sat-nav told me to do a U-turn. I tried to go wide and then I hit the barriers.

"I'm ok other than this."

Buses were re-routed as a result of the crash and officials were on the scene advising passengers and bus drivers.

Those looking to access Broad Street from the direction of Stafford Street were diverted along Whitmore Street.

Claire George, aged 22, a student at the University of Wolverhampton, said she was in the Hogshead when the crash happened.

She said: "I hadn't been in there long and I saw a few people going to the window. I thought someone had fallen over in the street because there were a few people laughing. The driver didn't look happy. I think he was embarrassed more than anything. I'm sure he's had better days."

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said: "At 3.40pm a HGV had gone into some fencing causing some traffic difficulties in the area.

"Despite this the flow of traffic was still continuing."
