A lorry was in collision with the emergency vehicle on the A4513 Alrewas Road near Lichfield.
The paramedics, a man and woman, were taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. They were not responding to an emergency call at the time.
A section of the road between Alrewas and Kings Bromley was closed for almost five hours after police crash investigators were called in.
A 32-year-old man from Poland was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to Burton police station for questioning.
Two Midlands Air Ambulances, based at RAF Cosford in Shropshire and Tattenhill in Staffordshire, were immediately scrambled to the scene.
The female ambulance driver was trapped for a short time before being treated for chest, pelvic, leg and head injuries and airlifted to University Hospital North Staffordshire.
Her male colleague suffered leg, chest and head injuries and was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The lorry driver involved in the smash, at 10.40am yesterday, escaped uninjured. Witnesses are urged to call police on 0300 123 44 55, quoting incident number 173 of February 3
