The woman, who was driving, was today described as being in a critical condition at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham having suffered serious burns and multiple broken bones.

Her silver-coloured Clio burst into flames after colliding with the lorry in Vulcan Road, trapping her at the wheel. A member of the public managed to pull her daughter from the wreckage as firefighters arrived to cut the mother free. The youngster was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital following treatment for head, shoulder and arm injuries.

Vulcan Road, just off the main Bilston Road, was closed for two hours following the crash at around 3.40pm yesterday.

Dave Burton, for the fire service, said the person who rescued the child was potentially a hero. The bin lorry was from Four Ashes-based waste and recycling company Veolia, which was unavailable for comment.nextpage
