Residents living near to the centre in Whitehouse Street woke this morning to find the roof of the centre completely gutted, with brickwork reduced to rubble and the front section of the council-owned centre ripped apart by the force of the fire, leaving only a charred shell.nextpage
Watch commander at Tipton fire station, Paul Harpin, said: "When we got there the centre was 100 per cent alight and totally engulfed by flames. We surrounded the building and attacked it from all four walls using jets and breathing apparatus. nextpage
He added: "Our firefighting action prevented the spread of the flames to the sports hall. There was poor water supply in the area so we had to get water from several streets away. We are treating it as a suspected arson attack."nextpage
