Four ambulance crews, an incident support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance were sent to the scene, where the man was confirmed dead. His female passenger was pronounced dead at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham. A woman in the car which collided with the bike was taken to New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, with back and neck injuries, while the driver of another car which crashed into the wreckage was unhurt.

Two members of the public were treated for abdominal pains and shock. Police sealed off a half-mile stretch of Birmingham New Road in both directions while efforts were made to save the motorcyclist and his passenger.

Crowds of residents formed on the edge of the police cordon after the smash, and dozens were still on the streets as recovery trucks arrived to collect vehicles involved at 11pm. The road reopened at 12.15am today.

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman Murray MacGregor said: "When crews arrived, they found the man and woman who had been on the bike lying in the road.

"It was clear that there was nothing that could be done to save the man, and he was confirmed dead at the scene. The crews immediately started advanced life support on the woman.

"She was airlifted to the regional trauma centre at Selly Oak Hospital but despite the best efforts of ambulance and hospital staff, it was not possible to save her, and she was confirmed dead shortly after arrival. A middle-aged woman in the car involved in the collision with the motorcycle was complaining of back and neck pain and was taken to New Cross Hospital.

"A second car had also been in collision with the first car but fortunately, the man driving this vehicle was not hurt. There were two members of the public treated at the scene.
