Police were called to reports of gunfire at a house in Crosby Close, on the Farndale Estate, in Whitmore Reans.

Three men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and have all been bailed pending further inquiries.

A fourth man was treated at hospital for a suspected gunshot wound. His injury was not thought to be life-threatening and he is expected to be released.

Blue and white police tape sealed off the semi-detached house, while forensic investigators scoured the property for clues.

Police have been making door-to-door inquiries at homes in the area.

A police cordon at the address has now been lifted. Shocked neighbours said there was mystery surrounding the shooting, which happened at around at 1.25am yesterday.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "We were woken up when we heard a noise outside. We saw blue lights flashing and there were lots of police everywhere.

"The police have been coming and going all day but we don't know what's going on."

Another added: "My wife is too scared to go outside now and I'm very wary myself. All we heard was a bit of a commotion and a banging noise.

"But then the next morning, police knocked on our door to ask if we had seen anything."

Catherine Preece, West Midlands Police spokeswoman, said: "Police are trying to establish the circumstances."

It is just one of a number of shootings in the city in recent times.

The nearby Bagot Arms, in Newhampton Road West, hit the headlines in March last year when a father was shot dead there.

Leighton Cohen, of Mostyn Street, Whitmore Reans, was jailed for 23 years in January for shooting bystander Luke Harris after a pub row.
