Christmas Day was extra special for couples across the Black Country and Staffordshire as they welcomed their babies into the world.

Among the mothers was Abigail Jones, aged 26, from Ivetsey Road, Wheaton Aston, who went into labour at Staffordshire General Hospital at 2am yesterday and gave birth to 8lb 10oz son Hayden at 7.54am.

Hayden is the sixth child of Abigail and husband Dave and joins three sisters, Ellie, aged five, Katie, three, and Hannah, two, as well as brothers Aaron, seven, and one-year-old Reece.

Proud father Dave said: "We have always said we wanted to have a big family - this is the best Christmas present ever."

Sarah Kaye from Deansfield Road, Wolverhampton, was one of the new mothers welcoming their bundles of joy into the world yesterday. She was not due to give birth for a fortnight.But baby Tyler bounced into the world weighing 7lb 9oz.

"It is the best Christmas present I have ever had - I'm ecstatic," said the delighted 25-year-old who lives with her parents Yvonne and Gary Davis and builder husband Andrew, 27.

Tipton teenager Tara Dupree has still to decide on a name for her baby girl, who weighed in at 7lb 8oz at Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital.

Tara, aged 17, who lives with parents Fran and Brian in Allen Road, celebrated with boyfriend Gavin Lloyd, a 20-year-old carpenter from Bilston.

Midwife Winsom Hazel was among staff on duty at New Cross and knew exactly how the Christmas Day mums felt as her daughter Abigail was born on December 25 13 years ago.

Seven babies entered the world at Sandwell General Hospital yesterday, with the first being born just 45 minutes after midnight.

Amolika Saduera was the first youngster to arrive on Christmas Day to the delight of proud parents Sangeeta and Amarjit Saduera of Smethwick.

Thirteen babies were born at Walsall Manor Hospital on Christmas Day, including one to hospital health care worker Laura Shaw, aged 27, of Heath Hayes, Cannock. Her first child Evie weighed in at 6lb 12oz.
