Poll: Who had the best World Cup coverage - ITV or BBC?

Published

So, who did you choose? It's the biggest match in the football calendar and – much to the dismay of people who can't stand the game – it was on the two main terrestrial channels at the same time.

More than 20 million viewers watched the World Cup final on BBC1 and ITV.

Both channels showed the match, in which Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time. At 10.30pm last night, 20.5 million viewers were watching.

Most viewers watched on BBC1, which drew a peak of 16.7 million, while 3.8 million tuned in at the same time to ITV.

ITV attracted its own peak of 3.9 million for the final at a different time of 9.45pm.

The match drew an average of 14.9 million – 12.1 million for BBC1 and 2.8 million for ITV. England's game against Uruguay, which left them on the brink of exiting the World Cup, was watched by a peak of 20.3 million.

In 2012, a peak of more than 26 million British viewers watched the Olympics closing ceremony on BBC1.

But why do so many people choose Auntie?

Is it simply to avoid the adverts – or is the BBC really better at this sort of thing?
