FOND MEMORIES OF LEISURE CENTRE

In what may be a final salute to the old Dudley Leisure Centre in Wellington Road prior to demolition, perhaps now is an appropriate time to reflect upon a building which helped shape the lives of thousands of Dudley folk for over 40 years.

Opening in the late 70s, DLC was an instant success story, where swimming, badminton, gymnastics, judo, netball, volleyball, table tennis and a host of classes flourished in an environment where sport was indeed, for all.

This was the time that squash took off in the UK, and DLC was in the right place at the right time. Blessed with six squash courts which were fully booked all day, every day, with leagues, teams, coaching, and tournaments hosting some of the country's top squash players, no wonder Dudley squash hit the stratosphere. There will still be many Dudley folk with their squash rackets now retired and stored away in their lofts, who remember those heady days at DLC.
