JUST WHEN IS A POTHOLE UNSAFE?
How dangerous do potholes have to be to qualify for emergency repair? There is a cluster of holes on the road between Chesterton and Burnhill Green. Although unclassified, this road is effectively the main road between Bridgnorth, Albrighton and the M54. As such it is very heavily used by villagers, commuters and large farm vehicles.
These holes have been there for some time and reported on a number of occasions. It is not possible to post a photograph on ‘Fix My Street' as it simply says that the issue has been reported, presumably multiple times as friends say it has been getting worse for months. The What3words location is Applied.Contexts.Bonfires.
The holes are in the centre of the carriage way, the biggest one being 6 feet by 3 feet and some 6 inches deep. Another alongside is 6 feet by 18 ins at the widest point and also very deep. Cones had been placed in the largest to warn drivers (three present on 24 Oct) but large agricultural vehicles have no option but to drive over them and since then they have disappeared, leaving only the bases in the hole. In wet weather, the holes are of course invisible and extremely dangerous in the middle of the highway.
You may consider this worthy of an article in your paper as soon as possible, in the hope that someone in responsibility at Shropshire Council will read it. Perhaps you can invite them to comment? Surely a repair would be more cost effective than litigation for car damage or worse! The potholes are not even marked with white paint.
