LETTER: Labour misguided on this issue
Tuesday, September 25, 2018, a day on which the Labour Party sought to trash democracy and in the process, abandon the Labour leave voters amongst the 17.4 million people who voted to leave the EU.
As I saw it, a significant handful of Labour Party members out of the some 200 present stood and cheered wildly at the conclusion of Keir Starmer’s speech calling for another referendum, which chose to include the option of staying in the EU. What was less noticeable were the number of members that remained seated.
I do not dislike Jeremy Corbyn as a person, however I believe that although he is well meaning, he is misguided on this particular issue.
It is well known that he is as Eurosceptic as they come but by failing to recognise the difference between party members and Labour voters and subsequently seeking to appease a handful of party members on this issue, he may have inadvertently damaged the party and alienated many Labour voters in the process.
On this day a certain minority of Labour party members sought to bring into disrepute the whole British democratic system, there may be some Labour voters who may never forgive them for pursuing this option.
