Good to see positive news about the city

With all the bad publicity about the state of Wolverhampton city centre it is good to see something positive going on in our city. I refer to the progress of the university in so many fields, the article in the E&S, October 18, where celebrity architect and TV presenter George Clark visited the former Springfield Brewery site, now housing three separate teaching/training schools for the Midlands construction industry. This is something practical, and down to earth. A super-apprenticeship course, to my mind, and long needed.

George Clarke at the former Springfield Brewery site

I wonder what poet laureate, John Masefield would have said about it, he worked at Springfield Brewery when living in Wolverhampton for several years, and publishing his famous poems using money earned when working in there.

I remember Heath Town as it was 60 odd years ago before the flats (high rise) and the little pub called The Travellers Rest, I wonder if Masefield called in there?

‘Pub fever’

I must go down to the pub again,

For a friendly pint and a pie.

And all I ask in a stout glass,

With a handle to lift it by.
