The UK government is matching the first £5 million given by the public, meaning the total raised has exceeded £10 million.

The Queen has also made a donation, although Buckingham Palace did not disclose how much the monarch gave to the campaign.

So far, almost 5,000 people have been killed by the virus and more than 13,000 have been infected although experts say the real figures could be much higher.

To make a donation to the DEC Ebola Crisis Appeal visit www.dec.org.uk, you can call the 24 hour hotline on 0370 60 60 900, donate over the counter at any high street bank or post office, or send a cheque. You can also donate £5 by texting the word SUPPORT to 70000.
