At a local council meeting the other day a Conservative councillor described the Chancellor of the Exchequer, among other things, as "Rachel from accounts."

Immediately Labour councillors called him out, as people like to say these days, for being a "misogynist."

I am not sure what enemies of the state like pensioners and farmers call Rachel Reeves, but the first time I heard "Rachel from accounts" it came from Nigel Farage, and I took it to be a sneering swipe at her CV, the reliability of which has been been called into question.

I have also read that it may be a take on a television show called Colin From Accounts, although the reference is lost on me as I've never watched it.

Sir Keir Starmer is, we are repeatedly reminded, a former Director of Public Prosecutions, and as prosecutions are his bag, one way of tackling misogyny would be to prosecute offenders for the crime of expressing hatred of women.

But what if the accused said: "Yes, I hate women, but my hate is rational." Would that be a valid defence?

I ask only because the other day I watched Jeremy Vine's show on telly and there was a woman journalist guest who said she hated Nigel Farage. Hold on, said Jeremy, it's wrong to express hate like that because it's just emotion.

The journalist explained that her hate of Nigel Farage was legitimate because it was "rational."
