I have long believed that you can judge the quality of a school by its use of the E-word. Go along to any parents' evening and you'll hear the headteacher banging on about what a great school it is. And at some stage he or she will drop the word “ethos". Academics love ethos because, unlike embarrassing exam results or horrifying truancy figures, it can't be measured. It just sounds nice and warm and fuzzy.
