Peter Rhodes on inaugurations, contactless cards, and a most thoughtful manifestation
New ways with old words. Even at my immense age one still comes across the occasional word or phrase you've never encountered in a certain context before.
We are considering installing a glass door in Chateau Rhodes. The salesman who came to measure up asked whether we wanted a manifestation.
A manifestation? A typical dictionary definition is: “The public display of emotion or feeling, or something theoretical made real.” Turns out that in the glass door industry, a manifestation is a pattern or image that may be engraved or stuck on the glass to prevent people walking through it. I suppose “manifestation” is more diplomatic than “clot-stopper.”
