Express & Star comment: Nuclear testing sacrifice must be recognised

Tom Watson is right to call for recognition for Britain’s nuclear veterans.

A medal is the very least they deserve.

The case of National Serviceman John Ward, who was sent to Christmas Island in 1958 where the UK’s nuclear tests took place, is deeply concerning.

We will never know for sure whether the startling toll of illness that he and his family have endured is linked to those tests.

However, the fact that so many veterans and their families have suffered serious illness deserves further examination.

It is pleasing to hear that Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has agreed to meet with veterans to discuss their concerns.

Mr Ward, along with everyone else who was stationed in the South Pacific during the tests, deserves to have his sacrifice recognised.

And it should be done in the right way with a proper ceremony.

We urge everyone to sign the petition calling for these men to be given medals.
