Star comment: Morgan’s heart in the right place

There is no doubt that former Wolves owner Steve Morgan certainly polarised opinion during his time at Molineux.

Many Wolves fans will never forgive him for a perceived lack of investment in the team, as well as a number of dubious managerial appointments.

However, it is worth reflecting that things could have been so much worse had Mr Morgan not taken charge.

Today he reveals that Molineux was at risk of closure when he arrived in the city, while at one time ‘the life of the club’ was threatened.

Mr Morgan helped to put the club back on a steady financial footing during his tenure.

His revamp of the North Bank also finished off the job started by Sir Jack Hayward in turning Molineux into the fine stadium that it is today.

In hindsight, Mr Morgan deserves some plaudits for his time in the boardroom at Wolves.

His influence can also be seen elsewhere in the city, not least in The Way youth zone, which has become one of Wolverhampton’s biggest success stories in recent years.

Mr Morgan is understandably proud of how the centre has become such a focal point for youngsters seeking entertainment in the city.

Let us not forget, this is a man who was digging sewers at the age of 19, but had founded his own company just two years later.

He is a textbook example of what can be achieved through hard work and ambition.

His mantra can be a lesson to us all: Thou shalt work like hell and thou shalt be lucky.

There is no doubting his commitment to helping the youth of today to achieve their goals.

His latest act of generosity is to pledge £1 million to support a new five-year mentoring scheme which will help 340 young people from Wolverhampton.

Mr Morgan will always have his detractors.

There are certainly issues that he could probably have dealt with in a better way during his nine years in charge at Wolves.

But there is no denying that he has used his success in the business world to help others around him.

Mr Morgan can be seen as a businessman who has the community at heart.
