Star Comment: Dodgy Pcs ruin trust in police
Trust in the police must be sacrosanct. Damage that trust and the ability to adequately protect our cities, towns and villages is eroded.
The actions of constables Wahid Husman and Tahsib Majid are completely reprehensible.
The public will be outraged that two warranted officers, who are meant to keep the public from harm, intended to flood the streets with deadly and dangerous drugs. They are a disgrace and must be jailed for a considerable amount of time.
The audaciousness of this pair is beyond belief. The fact they thought they could use a police car to steal drugs off of a dealer and then sell them onto organised crime gangs is utterly shocking. This is the sort of thing readers of the Express & Star would expect to feature in a TV drama or a thriller novel, rather than a court report about their own police force.
West Midlands Police must be congratulated for spotting this conspiracy and for its counter corruption unit taking swift action.
The vast majority of officers are decent people who do a very difficult job to protect and serve the public.
But the irresponsible and dangerous actions of a few rogue individuals can do considerable damage.
Reputations take years to build but only minutes to shatter. The sentencing judge must take this into consideration when determining how long Husman and Majid will spend behind bars.
Misconduct in public office is a very serious offence. It abuses the trust, power, and responsibility the people endow in our public servants.
We hope that Chief Constable Dave Thompson and his senior team will do everything they can to make sure something like this can never happen again.
It is worrying that Husman and Majid believed they would be able to get away with this.
West Midlands Police must ensure that every warranted officer and staff member knows that they have nowhere to escape if they flirt with corruption.
Dodgy officers must be rooted out. We must not let this case tarnish West Midlands Police’s reputation.
In recent months they have proved their worth multiple times over.
It is now up to the judiciary to ensure that a very strong message is sent out.
Husman and Majid have lost their careers and their livelihoods. They must now lose their liberty too.
