Express & Star Comment: High time for Theresa May to show steel

Now is the time for Theresa May to show her steel.

Theresa May

All around her the Prime Minister is having to deal with cloying arguments and minutiae about our departure from the EU.

She needs to show the vision and attitude of the country’s only previous female leader.

Admittedly, times have changed since Mrs Thatcher ruled the roost, but political will and determination remain essential values for anyone who takes up residence in 10 Downing Street.

The best have had these qualities in spades. The worst, such as David Cameron and John Major, have lacked even an ounce.

The Government should not need reminding that it has a majority in the House of Commons and a strong chief whip in the form of South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson.

Crucially, it also has the backing of the millions of people in this country who voted for Brexit.

The majority of politicians on the Labour side of the House of Commons have also come to terms with the fact that we are leaving the EU.

Under no circumstances should the Prime Minister become distracted by the moaning voices in the broadcast media, particularly the BBC.

There are those who were deeply shocked and disappointed in the Brexit vote. Many of them have still yet to come to terms with the fact that Britain is waving goodbye to the EU.

The lesson they should have taken on board by now is that life and political opinion exist beyond the borders of the M25.

The majority have had their say, and the majority will have their way.

This is democracy in action.

The people do not need to be cowed by any legal arguments or House of Lords grandstanding.

The public made its decision in June last year. The fact that the vote went against the will of this country’s political elite and pro-Europe sections of the media has led to an outcry that has already delayed matters for far too long.

The sooner those individuals come around to the reality of Brexit, the better.

Prevarication is no good for anyone.

The time has come for Article 50 to be invoked as soon as possible.

We know that Mrs May has committed to triggering Article 50 by the end of this month.

The lady needs to prove she is not for turning.
