This footage shows shoppers in a supermarket in northern France wrestling to get their hands on a stack of discounted Nutella jars.

Shouts can be heard as shoppers barge in front of each other to grab multiple jars, with one woman flinging aside a cardboard jar holder in a quest for the bargain chocolate spread.

Scenes of shoppers clambering over each other for bargains were reported across France, following a promotion at supermarket chain Intermarche.

The were offering the 950g jars for 1.41 euro (£1.23), down from 4.50 euro (£3.93), which is just under 70% off.

In the UK, similarly sized 1kg Nutella jars go for around £5.20.

One woman told regional newspaper Le Progres that people in her local supermarket in Loire, central France, had behaved “like animals”.

“A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box to the head, another had a bloody hand. It was horrible,” she said.

Ferrero, the Italian firm that makes Nutella, distanced themselves from the promotion, saying “the decision for the special offer was taken unilaterally by Intermarche”.

“We regret the consequences of this operation, which created confusion and disappointment in the consumers’ minds.”
