Chancellor furnishes Downing Street flat with ex-display wardrobe
The cut-price item was delivered to the family’s new home on Friday.
The Chancellor’s family have shown that a tight grasp on the purse strings applies to the household finances as well as at the Treasury.
A delivery crew was seen dropping off an ex-display Marks & Spencer double wardrobe to 11 Downing Street on Friday, as Sajid Javid and his family prepare to move in.
It has been reported that Mr Javid and his family will move into the slightly smaller apartment above Number 10, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson will live in the larger lodgings above Number 11 with his girlfriend Carrie Symonds.
The online description of the product being delivered on Friday reveals it is made from “sustainable wood” and “features a sturdy rung for hanging up your clothes to keep out the creases”.
It also claims the “wardrobe carries a wonderful vibe of natural energy that will immediately enhance your bedroom decor”.
The Marks & Spencer Sonoma wardrobe, which usually retails for £899, was addressed to Laura Javid, the Chancellor’s wife.
A disclaimer on the side of the oak-coloured furniture reads: “This item is sold as seen and we are unable to offer exchanges or refunds in relation to damage or imperfections, which have been pointed out to you at the time of purchase.”
