She was honoured for her tireless efforts to help disabled people across the Black Country and Staffordshire.

The deadline to nominate your local heroes for our next awards ceremony is approaching – there are just two days left.

It could be someone like Eileen who was named the Community Champion of the Year.

Eileen who is in her 70s and from Aldridge, Walsall, told of how she had worked since the 1950s to ensure that disabled people in the region had access to worthwhile activities and events, and is now secretary of the Pelsall Disabled Organisation.

She said: “Disabled people are some of the most fantastic people to work with and I know they’ll be so proud that I’ve won.

“It’s for them really, and to show how far we’ve all come.”

She was presented her award by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Barry Findlay and Ibeth Mena Santos of sponsors Birmingham Airport and Qatar Airways.

We are aiming to provide the opportunity to give someone, like Eileen, in the Black Country or Staffordshire who deserves recognition to step into the spotlight.

It can be someone who has taken on a challenge, bettered themselves or helped others to win eight awards which could be someone you know.

This year’s awards are: Ambassador of the Year , Young Star of the Year, Community Champions, Fresh Start Award, Fundraiser of the Year, Learner Award, Teacher of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Speaking after the first awards, Olympic gymnast Kristian Thomas said: “It was a really inspiring and humbling night.

“It was quite special to hear their stories, hear the number of hours they’ve put into help other people or different charities.”

The next awards ceremony will take place at Molineux in January. Keep in mind the phrase ‘not all heroes wear capes’ when putting names forward for the awards at www.starthankyou.expressandstar.co.uk/nomination-form or by calling 01902 319360.
