The Great Big Thank You Awards: Vote for your unsung heroes

There's just days left to nominate your unsung heroes for our Great Big Thank You Awards.

One of the incredible awards on offer is for Teacher of the Year, which went to Keith Sedgebeer, 70, at the very first ceremony.

He was presented the awards by sports commentator, Jacqui Oatley MBE, and Wolverhampton council's Keith Ireland for his outstanding work as a teacher for over four decades.

He said: "It's amazing to be able to collect this award, and to accept it on behalf of many, many thousands of very talented teachers here in the city.

"I'm very grateful to the Express & Star and to the City of Wolverhampton Council for recognising the immense contribution teachers make to the welfare of our children and our city."

Keith, a former schools inspector, is now conductor of Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra and over the years has helped hundreds of young people perform all over the world. He is also chair of governors at Highfields School.

The Teacher of the Year award was sponsored by the City of Wolverhampton Council and Director of Education Julien Kramer said: "Keith is a remarkable colleague and it was a great privilege, on behalf of the City of Wolverhampton Council, to honour the lifetime service he has given to the children, the young people and the communities across the city. He's a remarkable guy; I congratulate him and I thank him."
