Staffordshire County Council’s road programme will include more than 450 preventative carriageway maintenance schemes, totalling 1.4m square metres in 2025/26, as well as more than £1m of work to repair highway drainage.

The additional £15m will be used to fund an additional JCB Pothole Pro and crew, alongside a preventative maintenance programme. And £12m has been earmarked for schemes to improve road safety across the county, including crossings, traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian and cycle access.

Cabinet members were given details of the investment programme at their latest meeting. Councillor Mark Deaville, cabinet member for strategic highways, said: “Good roads are essential to us all and this council understands the importance of our highways.

“The extra money we invested last year was money well spent and that money has really paid dividends. As we come out of one of the wettest winters on record, we’re in a good position to fix more roads with the same urgency and same focus as last year’s recovery plan.

“This additional money we’re investing means we’re able to build on last year’s successful programme to fix more roads and to really make a difference. It’s not just about fixing roads though – other really important improvements that improve road safety, ease congestion and enable economic growth are our key priorities.

“The investment over the next 12 months is made up of £10.5m to deliver 13 major structural maintenance and resurfacing schemes and over £20m to provide 471 roads across the county with best value preventative maintenance treatments, with a further £1.9m for the treatment of our footways. A further £11m (is) to repair an additional 14,000 existing potholes and defects – that’s on top of the 36,000 potholes repaired in the last 12 months.

“A really important part of our work is our integrated transport improvements that improve road safety. Examples include a 40mph speed reduction in Hanchurch which is very well received by residents, the introduction of a 30mph scheme through The Blythe near Uttoxeter and I’m delighted to see the provision of a pedestrian crossing in Upper Tean.”
