Passengers described facing long queues on Tuesday morning with one person saying it was "ridiculous" whilst another described it as a "poor experience".

Birmingham Airport chiefs said queues were managed and steadily moving as they helped many of the more than 14,000 customers booked to fly out on Tuesday.

A spokesman advised: "As always, we ask customers to arrive at the airport exactly when your airline advises – and to help us help you keep queues moving by removing any liquids, gels, pastes and electrical items from your bags before our security x-ray scanners."

It comes after thousands of passengers flying from the airport on Monday were faced to wait in long queues outside for several hours amid staff shortages.

And of the 15,000 customers booked to fly out of Birmingham Airport on Monday, 99.9 per cent successfully caught their flights – with everyone who missed their flight being rebooked.

The situation on Monday was described as "absolute chaos" and "manic" by people on Twitter, with others branding it a "lack of management".

Long queues have been reported at airports across the UK in recent weeks, including at Heathrow, Manchester and Stansted.

This has been blamed on a number of factors, including the time it takes for new ground staff to pass security clearance, staff sickness, a lack of Border Force officials and the spike in demand for travel following the end of the UK's coronavirus restrictions.
